Eric is a barrister specialising in international human rights law and EU law. Before joining Monckton Chambers in 2011, he spent more than eight years as the director of human rights policy at JUSTICE, one of the UK’s leading human rights organisations. He has undertaken human rights work in a wide range of countries, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Russia, Rwanda, Taiwan and Turkey.

He is ranked as a leading junior in Civil Liberties & Human Rights in the UK by the Legal 500 and is regularly instructed in cases involving freedom of expression, privacy and data protection. He is recognised as a leading expert on the law relating to surveillance powers in the UK, having authored the report, Freedom From Suspicion: Surveillance Reform for a Digital Age (JUSTICE, 2011). He is currently acting for Liberty, the ACLU, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties and the South African Legal Resources Centre in their claims against the UK intelligence services before the Investigatory Powers Tribunal concerning the PRISM and Tempora programmes operated by the NSA and GCHQ respectively.
