An academic at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia since 2002, Dr John Selby's research focuses upon the commercial regulation of the Internet. Applying both a New Legal Realist perspective and New Institutional Economics theory, Dr Selby has studied the feasibility of national filtering systems as a defence against cyber-crimes; the history of the regulation of the .au ccTLD; the regulatory intersection between online payment systems and competition in online auctions; the effectiveness of competition between online dispute resolution providers; and the legal and economic implications of the digital distribution of music. He has lectured on cyber-crimes and cyber-security in a variety of post-graduate courses. Dr Selby was a Postel Center Visiting Scholar in 2009 and the Lowy Institute recognised him as one of Australia's "New Voices in Technology and International Relations" in 2006. Prior to entering academia, Dr Selby practiced as a lawyer in large law firms in Tokyo and Sydney.
